Surgical Periodontal Therapy

Surgical Periodontal Therapy is reserved for patients that have severe pocket depths or specific types of bone loss that won’t resolve with Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy. Most of our patients go through this procedure under conscious sedation and local anesthesia. The pockets are accessed surgically and cleaned and debrided thoroughly. In specific cases that bone loss can be repaired, regenerative procedures will be done in an attempt to regrow the lost bone, ligaments and soft tissue. In cases that regeneration is not possible, pocket reduction procedure will be done to ensure the areas are accessible by patient and/or the hygienist for plaque removal, so the bone loss does not get worse in future. Patients can expect to have sutures in the surgical areas after this procedure. These sutures are either removed by our team or dissolve on their own. Some patient’s experience sensitivity to cold for up to 3 months after the procedure on the treated dentition. Patient’s commitment to plaque removal is required for a good outcome from this procedure.
